We are to forgive everyone who has done something against us, no matter how bad it was or how long ago it happened. This fact remains even if they haven’t asked for forgiveness, repented, or changed their pattern of behavior. Unforgiveness holds our own hearts hostage. Jesus has already done all that needs to be done so that sins can be forgiven.
In our prayer life, we are to let go of the hard feelings towards that person and pray for them. We serve a Triune God who wants the best for us; surrendering unforgiveness to Him is best for our hearts. When we continue to hold on to the negative emotions or continue to relive the event, we are unable to experience the joy that God has for us.
Until we surrender this hurt to our Lord, this obstacle keeps us from an intimate relationship with Him and prevents us from experiencing His peace. Forgiveness is a decision, but it’s not a one and done deal. For deep hurt, we can choose to surrender and forgive today. When something happens tomorrow that brings up this hurt in our hearts, we must make the choice to forgive again. The Holy Spirit will help us through this process, providing guidance and eventual healing.
“And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.” Mark 11:25 (NIV)
