Quieting Your Soul

“Be still and listen.” Isaiah 41:1

For years, I struggled with honoring a quiet time with the Lord. Distractions, noise, and to-do lists pushed their way into my mind as I tried, even strived, to concentrate on God. I asked Him to help me become aware of His presence, and I put notes around my house to remind me to talk to Him and share with Him. I set aside time to talk with Him and listen for His voice.

That was another issue. I didn’t recognize His voice, so how would I know when He spoke? Stillness is key in learning to recognize His voice and promptings. We quiet our souls by drawing near to God, simply focusing on Him. When we find pleasure in just being with Him, our spirit is open to receiving what He desires to give, share, and speak.

We can learn much from Mary of Bethany, who enjoyed being in His presence. She sat at His feet, listening to His words, studying His face, and accepting His unconditional love. Her focus was on Jesus (Luke 10:38-42). Her worship was to Jesus (John 12:3). Her faith was in Jesus (John 11:32).

Let us draw near to God, sitting at His feet, worshiping, and listening. Do you hear His heartbeat? Can you sense His nearness? Try it. Just be in His presence. Listen. What is He speaking to you? What is He saying?

Serving Together,

Mary
